Evaporative Swamp
How much will a Swamp Cooler / evaporative cooler lower the temperature of a hot, humid area?
Pretty much what the question asks, I have a room that has poor circulation near my closet / computer area so as I type this I am quite stuffy and hot. The temperature inside the room ranges from 85-88 and the humidity is slightly lower than 40%.
I am a college student so funds are limited but will a swamp cooler / evaporative cooler be able to lower the temperature in this area, even if it's only a couple degrees? Even 2-3 degrees would be great.
When the door is closed it gets up to 90+ degrees @ 41% humidity.
pegminer is correct. If the swamp cooler is 100% efficient, it will cool the air to the wet bulb. But, I never could find a cooler that came close to 100% efficiency. I ended up in putting in refrigerated Air Conditioning in my home.
All I had was a swamp cooler for many years and it is a little dependent on how well you can handle the dampness. Swamp coolers work by evaporating water into the air. You end up with cooler air but it increases the RH. The swamp cooler will increase the humidity to between 85% and 90% and generally will only cool to about 5 degrees F of the wet bulb. The added dampness can be difficult on unprotected metal and utensils (rust) and clothing (mold and mildew)
In your example of 85 to 88 degrees and 40% RH, the wetbulb is around 68 degrees. I would think the air coming from a swap cooler would be between 73 and 75 degrees with an RH of 85%.
Make sure you have the type of swamp cooler that continiously pulls in air from the outside. The little portable swamp coolers that you just sit in the room will keep adding water to the air until it is 100% RH and then won't cool since it can not evaporate any additional water.
