what does it cost to get central air in a 1200 square foot, one story home in PA?

the house has never had central air. the duct work will go in the attic and the vents will be on the ceiling. we are thinking a 2 ton unit.

You'll need a big enough opening to get the Air Handler unit up into the attic, so you may need to install some pull down attic stairs in your ceiling somewhere. Another requirement is the condensate drain pipe that should run directly from the trap at the air handler unit down a first floor partition wall to the basement plumbing drain connection. Make sure you ask the contractor for a modern plastic trap that is designed for the homeowner to easily clean it because the traps get clogged up every year. It would be convenient for maintenance if the air handler and top of the new pull down stairway were centrally located in the attic. An emergency condensate drip pan must be installed under the entire air handler unit in case the primary condensate trap gets backed up and the water overflows. Otherwise, your entire ceiling sheetrock and attic insulation would be flooded with water. The emergency drain pan is connected to a pipe which is run to the roof soffitt area so that you can see water coming out to alert you to a plugged trap.
Finally you need a big air return register centrally located and connected to the air handler directly above in the attic. Total cost of the job for a 13 SEER unit (the minimum SEER required by law): $7,000 (my minimum estimate).
